The Cessnock Wastewater Treatment Works was originally built in 1932 and was typical of facilities of the time, with a nominal capacity of 23,000 Equivalent Persons (EP) as a trickling filter plant. The plant has had several minor upgrades between 1978 and 1995 to include other infrastructure such as sludge lagoons, maturation ponds, wetlands, and chemical phosphorus removal to achieve the ultimate capacity of the existing plant to service approximately 32,000 people in the areas of Cessnock, Aberdare, Bellbird, and Nulkaba.

The upgrade of the Cessnock Wastewater Treatment Works will modernise the treatment processes and techniques, resulting in an improvement of the overall wastewater quality. This upgrade represents a positive shift towards sustainability and environmental care as we anticipate the future generations demands and the population growth. These upgrades will meet the new limits set by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA).

The work includes design, supply, installation, construction, testing and commissioning of the upgrades, consisting of:

  • Replacement of four existing trickling filters with a new bio batch reactor
  • New chemical dosing systems
  • New waste thickening system
  • Upgrade of the existing ferric oxide dosing and storage system
  • Power and control system upgrades

ARA Electrical | J.A Martin, based out of Tomago NSW, was engaged by Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure to perform the electrical and control system upgrade on the new and modified plant consisting of approx. 70 new drives and 300 instruments/valves.

The following tasks associated were completed for the project for which we achieved with zero LTI/MTI or environmental issues:

  • Complete low voltage electrical and control system design
  • Incoming high voltage supply upgrade
  • Manufacture and installation of 1,250Amp Main switchboard and generator backup system
  • Manufacture and installation of new motor control centre, remote I/O panels, chemical dosing panels and field local control stations
  • Fit out of new Switchrooms including subflooring, HVAC, fire and security systems
  • Installation of onsite electrical infrastructure variable speed drives, UPS system, active harmonics, lighting, cable support systems, incoming and submain cabling, drive and instrumentation cabling
  • Supply and installation of new and upgrade to the existing obsolete site PLC and network system, and upgrade to from LV to ELV control systems

ARA Electrical | J.A Martin utilises their capabilities to oversee and execute electrical projects from their initial concept to completion. This approach includes design, engineering, project management, manufacturing, and installation, ensuring a streamlined and efficient process. With third-party involvement, we ensure that every aspect of the project aligns with the highest standards of quality and reliability.
